A hagoita is a rectangular wooden paddle that was used to play hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton. This hagoita-shaped metal box obviously served a different purpose (see below).
It is engraved with two mons (cherry blossom and ?) and an inscription : 浄益造 Joeki zo (made by Joeki).
This name refers to a lineage of metal casters, all using the clan name 中川 浄益 (Nakayama Joeki), active in Kyoto for 11 generations. I am indebted to Guy Pepermans (Asia Art forums) for this information.
