Kōno Bairei (幸野 楳嶺 1844-1895) is famous for his albums and prints of birds and flowers.
Bairei gafu is in three volumes (the last one dedicated to flowers and insects).
They are available at the Smithsonian Libraries
(1905 edition) and at the British Museum (
vol. 1,
vol. 2,
vol. 3 of the 1886 edition, and
vol. 1,
vol. 2,
vol. 3 of the 1896 edition).
We acquired individual prints of the first two volumes.
Our prints are presented in the same order as that in the volumes of the Smithsonian Libraries, which slightly differs from that in the British Museum volumes.
The English names of the birds and plants were taken from the Reader collection website. The names in Japanese are those of the birds written on the prints, they do not always agree with the Japanese names given in the Reader Collection page.
