Hasami Bako
small travelling chest

This Hasami Bako is a lacquer rectangular travelling chest, with gold-plated brass mounts to the corners and body. The handles on two opposite sides will swing upwards to take a pole through the upper slots. It is thus carried on the shoulder.

The chest is decorated with two mons (crests), a 3-5-3 Paulownia, and Bamboo and sparrows; these crests identify the family that owns it. I have not been able to identify this family, nor do I know its origin; I bought it in February 2018 on internet.

The size of the chest is 33cm high x 55cm wide x 37cm deep, perhaps slightly smaller than average. While the chest is probably from the 19th century, the black 8-legged wooden stand on which it rests was made recently, copied from images of other old chests.
