The tale of Jiraya
自來也 説話
Jiraya Setsuwa

The tale of Jiraya was written by Kanwatei Onitake (感和亭鬼武 1760-1818) and illustrated by Teisai Hokuba (蹄斎北馬 1770-1844). It was published in eleven volumes in 1806-1807 (Bunka 3-4). Jiraya Setsuwa (自來也 説話), also read Jiraya Monogatari, is in six volumes numbered 1 to 4, 5上 and 5下. The sequel, Jiraya Setsuwa Kōhen (自來也 説話 後遍), is in five volumes numbered 1 to 5. The eleven volumes are available at Waseda University. The plot is summarized on a wikipedia page.

Volume 1 of the sequel is presented here. Since the book is in rather poor condition, only the first 4 folios and the last page are shown. The whole volume is available at Waseda University. Folios 1 and 2 of our copy show a preface for Jiraya Setsuwa Kōhen. This preface, which is not present in the volume of Waseda, must have been written for a new printing or edition of Jiraya Setsuwa Kōhen, since furthermore the calligraphy is different from that of the rest of the book. The last page of our copy is not in the Waseda volume either.

Click on the cover to browse the volume. As the folios are arranged in the Japanese way, they should be read from right to left.

侠客傳 Kyōkakuden
自來也 Jiraya

The daisen of the cover is erroneously labelled "侠客傳自來也" (Kyōkakuden Jiraya), probably because it was restored together with the volumes of Kaikan Kyōki Kyōkakuden which have the same daisen. it turns out that volume 4.1 of Kaikan Kyōki Kyōkakuden has a title page that is not appropriate for it, and that would fit the present volume. So it is certainly another mistake by the restorer.
